Project Sun Safe was an idea born in Decatur, Alabama. A mom was diagnosed with melanoma. Another mom pointed out their elementary school had no shade on its playground. More parents rallied around the idea of bringing sun safety and shade to their local schools and playgrounds in the hopes of preventing skin cancer in their community. From there, the idea grew into a movement. With your support, together, we can conceptualize this movement into a safer way of life for all.
We believe everyone under the sun deserves to be safe.
Our board consists of four moms of elementary school students. Our combined expertise includes environmental engineering, occupational health and safety, finance, legal, business management, marketing, and creative talent. Project Sun Safe is 100% a volunteer project for our board.
Our mission is simple - to keep our children safe.
We do this through sun safety education for children and their families, and by helping to build shade structures in the community free of charge. When schools adopt sun safety programs, they can reduce the risk of skin cancer and melanoma in both students and teachers. Sunscreen is one way to reduce UV exposure, but should not be the only means of protection. Outdoor shade is an effective prevention measure against UV-related cancers and illnesses (Reference: CDC).
Our vision is to bring free sun safety education programs to schools and community programs for kids, and to help them acquire both permanent and portable shade where needed. In doing these things, we hope to keep children safe in the present and prevent skin cancer in the future.
Schools, parent-teacher organizations, or community groups contact us. From there, we provide them with a free sun safety plan and program, complete with age-appropriate learning resources and step-by-step instructions for immediate implementation. Our environmental engineer (one of our board volunteers) will then schedule a visit to the area in which shade is desired and work with the school, group, or organization to find the best shade solution for the area. Project Sun Safe will liaise with local contractors or volunteers to ensure a seamless process from start to finish of the shade project. Our volunteer board will then help fundraise and write grants to acquire the necessary funding for the project. In the meantime, Project Sun Safe is able to provide portable shade options until a permanent solution is implemented. The school or organization may keep the temporary, portable shade even after a permanent shade structure is built, allowing them to be creative with when and how they are able to offer additional shade to their teachers and students. All of our services are offered and donated FREE OF CHARGE to the schools and organizations that contact us.
Are you a school administrator, teacher, parent, or someone who wants to help your school or organization acquire shade?
We're fairly new, but in 2022 we hit the ground running! We dreamed big, assembled our board, liaised with local legislators and school districts, and began growing. We supplied two entire school districts with free sun safety programs, impacting over two dozen schools and thousands of students. We wrote grants. We helped one elementary school win a $15,000 state grant for permanent shade on their P.E. blacktop. We walked one school through their playground shade project start to finish, and began working with another to do the same. We provided two local elementary schools with portable shade.
We had a busy 2022 and we can't wait to see what 2023 has in store for Project Sun Safe. Want to help us? Our goal in 2023 is to touch every public school in one county in Alabama. This pilot program is called Club 41 and aims to provide all 41 public schools in the county with a free sun safety program and free portable shade options. We hope this pilot program becomes the gold standard to which we hold ourselves and our work, and to which all schools aspire to be when it comes to sun safety. When you consider giving to Project Sun Safe, you are helping us realize this dream and turn sun safety into a reality for all.
